Box
Wall hangs suspended in the air as
a three dimensional textile of assembled boxes. Each individual unit
is made of paper folded into cubes of roughly 5 x 6 x 4 cm. These are
then sewn together to create a uniform grid that extends approximately
2 meters x 2 meters. The knitted network of voids and solids thus creates
a flexible surface that gracefully takes shape as its weight naturally
translates into slight bends and undulations. These in turn lend the
piece a sense of movement and lightness that seemingly contradicts its
inherent reference to masonry block construction. Despite the work's
modular character, its overall texture has a great deal of visual variety.
First of all, the piece is very porous with many openings created by
missing boxes. Secondly, each box is folded so as to leave its flaps
casually angled in, and these surfaces in turn catch light with different
intensities, ranging from very bright when perpendicular to the light
source to very dark, when hidden in shadow.
The piece is currently
being shown at the Fabriano Boutique in Rome, where it hangs in front
of a large mirror. A reflection appears behind it and can be seen through
the many openings of the Box Wall itself. The simultaneous
collage of two different planes into one, as the much smaller boxes
in the reflection collapse into the framed opening of the actual piece,
further enhances the vibrant almost sparkling character Box Wall
to present almost in spite of itself.
